SYRINGE EXCHANGE

 |
 |
 |
 |
Fact: It costs roughly $40,000 a year to care for a person with HIV. CitiWide's programs have a dramatic effect on reducing the number of new HIV infections among HIV drug users -- a new sterile syringe costs less than ten cents.

The Bronx leads New York City in new cases of HIV infection from needle-sharing
among drug users. We offer three services addressing this problem:
- Multi-service drop-in center - Syringe Exchange Program (SEP)
Syringe exchange is available Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, 9:00 am to 9:30 pm; Wednesdays, noon to 9:30 pm.
- Community-based sterile syringe distribution - CitiWide Works
We distribute sterile syringes to injectors on the streets
in under-served communities of the Bronx.
- Peer-Delivered Syringe Exchange
The peer-delivered syringe exchange improves access to new syringes, free of charge, for injection drug users who do not have access to a nearby SEP, but who are members of a social network which includes or has ties to SEP participants. This program enhances our efforts to stop the HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C pandemics.

Results: In 2007, more than 1,800 injecting drug users received sterile syringes through these programs a 68% increase compared to 2006
